For Immediate Release
04 March 2013
Town’s sports centre due to close early
Immingham Sports Centre will close to the public on Saturday, March 16, two weeks ahead of schedule in order to ensure that any sporting equipment and other fixtures and fittings can be removed and transferred to other local sporting centres.

The sports centre has been sold so that the land can be used for the town’s new food retail development. Planning permission has also been granted by North East Lincolnshire Council to enable the adjoining multi use games area to be re-provisioned within Immingham.  It is anticipated that this work will commence once work on the new retail development is underway.

Sport and Leisure Management Limited (SLM), who currently manage the facility, have been working with local clubs and users to assist them in finding alternative accommodation in advance of the closure.

Councillor Mick Burnett, portfolio holder for culture and tourism, said: “The facility was due to close on 31st March 2013, however it is important that engineering contractors from SLM are given two weeks of unrestricted access in order to ensure that the plant and equipment is removed safely prior to the deadline for handing over the keys.

“It is also vitally important that we make good use of the equipment and recycle wherever we can.
“We thank SLM for their work in assisting sporting clubs and other users to find suitable accommodation in the town and also for recognising the importance of re-using equipment where ever possible.”
